Dear Host Family
My name is Nokwanda but everyone at home calls me Kwandy. I was born and Raised in a township called Umlazi in Durban, South Africa. Growing up I’ve always loved the idea of being a Star. That all rooted from the movies I watched like High School Musical and the Cheetah Girls. So when I grew up I chose the path of being an artist and performed in Theatre shows in Durban and Johannesburg. I also had a breakthrough in a TV show called Erased in one our local TV channels. I’ve always loved writing stories, poems and also singing to children back that came to visit me until one day I took one of my poems to a recording studio and started singing them that’s when I discovered my favourite hobbies. I also enjoy the outdoors like camping and taking walks on the beach at night.
From the time I was a little girl, I knew that my safe space will always be around people I was raised by which is my community. A united place that supports every house hold through the good times and bad times. So my love for people and children, I can say is rooted from the love I was surrounded by growing up.
When I started taking care of children it started with a little girl called Khethelo Nxumalo, a bright spark who is now a 5-year-old model for local clothing businesses and child dancer. Taking care of her was very special to me because she engaged in every activity we did. We did a lot of singing our alphabets a numbers but her favourite activity was to put on a show in front of her family and show them what she learned that day. A few months after taking care of her I started taking care of a loving boy who is now 4 years old doing his second year in pre school. He was one of my biggest challenges because he needed his mother's love most of the time and his mother was in school.
This year I embarked on a journey to the Netherlands, Utrecht to take care and be part of the Van Rijn Family with their 2 beautiful children. Loekie and Manne have become such a huge part of my life that it’s difficult not think about them when you see something you know they’d like. They’re both so different yet love the same way. Being with them has given me a lot hope in understanding that love and kindness has no language barrier because I speak English and they’re Dutch but we’ve understood each other up until now and it’s only getting better .
. The reason why I want to be an au pair is because I know how much I love children since I’m a child at heart. I believe I will have a positive impact on the children and will leave a mark in their lives by showing them how beautiful the world is through their eyes and through their minds.
